About Us

In December 2016, seven people gathered at the Mount Royal Branch Library in Duluth, Minnesota, for the first meeting of the Vegan Cookbook Club. These folks didn’t know each other, but they shared an interest in a plant-based diet and a desire to explore this interest with others. Since that time, the club has met once a month and over 125 people have attended our meetings. We’ve also seen Vegan Cookbook Clubs spawning in other parts of the state and country. This website is intended to share what we have learned together and help others start Vegan Cookbook Clubs at their own libraries.

Member Stories

Amy – “My best friend’s family hunts. . . .When I go over to her house she like covers up the deer carcass on the floor so that it won’t offend me, and there’s like hooves sticking out. Luckily, I grew up around a lot of farmers and I know that this stuff happens. So I don’t talk about it a lot with her but she eats my food and she really likes it.”

Arlene – “My favorite vegan cuisine is Italian. I make polenta lasagna with mushrooms, mushroom risotto, and mushroom bolognese.”

Bernie – “The book, We Are the Weather, flipped a switch.”

Ellen – “I think the documentary “Forks Over Knives” helped a lot of folks think differently about nutrition and animal agriculture.”

Jody – “Our club is made of people from different walks of life, whether its age or race or education, career, financial, whatever.”

Nan – “I do miss bacon. But I’ve found that tempeh marinated in some soy sauce and other things, and then baked, satisfies my craving.”

Tracy – “It started with a health scare…”
